Project Overview

EPEC Group was engaged by Global Power Generation (GPG), the international power generation subsidiary of Naturgy Group, to deliver the full EPC of a 132/33kV substation and the Damascus Switching Station for the Bundaberg Solar Farm in Bullyard, Queensland — marking GPG’s first project in the Queensland electricity market. The scope encompassed the complete design, construction, and commissioning of a 100MVA substation including balance of plant SCADA, bulk earthworks, and the full EPC of an Ergon Energy Design, Construct, Transfer (DCT) switching yard, connecting into Ergon Energy and Powerlink’s HV network.

GPG selected EPEC based on our demonstrated capability in delivering complex HV connection assets, initially engaging us to deliver the Ergon switchyard before expanding our scope to include the solar farm substation. As a first-time entrant into the Queensland market, GPG recognised the value of EPEC’s established relationships with local Network Service Providers and our deep experience navigating the technical and regulatory requirements of both Ergon Energy and Powerlink — knowledge that would prove critical to keeping the project on track.

What set this project apart was EPEC’s ability to respond decisively when Ergon Energy revealed a network outage constraint that threatened to delay energisation by approximately five months. Rather than accepting the delay, EPEC reworked the entire project schedule, took on additional scope, and accelerated construction by overlapping civil, electrical, and test and commissioning works — all while progressing procurement and key deliverables ahead of approved design drawings. Drawing on lessons learned from previous projects, EPEC also successfully negotiated with Ergon Energy to accept a non-standard Power Voltage Transformer, significantly reducing the overall program and de-risking the project — demonstrating the technical depth, commercial awareness, and proactive delivery culture that defines the EPEC team.
