Why Instability Detection Matters
As more renewable generators connect to the grid, network service providers are tightening their requirements around forced oscillation and instability detection. Under NER clause S5.2.5.10, generators are increasingly required to demonstrate real-time detection capability as a condition of connection.
TransGrid, VicGrid and Powerlink have each released their own requirements under this clause, and more NSPs are expected to follow. For generator owners, that means instability detection is no longer optional. It is fast becoming a standard part of getting connected and staying connected.
EPEC Technologies VIIVX product was designed in-house to meet these requirements directly, drawing on our own experience delivering grid connections and commissioning across the National Electricity Market.
Built to Meet Australian Grid Connection Standards
VIIVX is designed to align with instability detection requirements under NER clause S5.2.5.10 as they are released by Australian network service providers. Powerlink’s requirement also calls for an external high frequency recorder alongside the instability detection system.
- NER Clause S5.2.5.10
- Transgrid Asynchronous Generator Requirement
- Powerlink IBR Connection Requirements
- Vicgrid S5.2.5.10 Guideline
- Real-Time Oscillation Detection
- Modbus TCP SCADA Integration
Grid Connection Expertise
Developed using EPEC's own experience across grid connections, commissioning and SCADA integration.
Advanced Detection Algorithm
Uses multi-mode decomposition to accurately separate forced oscillations from background noise, with fully configurable detection thresholds.
Matched to NSP Requirements
Built specifically to align with the requirements of Australian network service providers under NER clause S5.2.5.10.
Compact, Reliable Hardware
Powered by a robust Bachmann controller, designed to integrate easily with existing site SCADA.
What VIIVX Delivers
VIIVX combines accurate detection with straightforward integration, so it fits into your existing site without adding operational complexity.
- Identifies oscillations from 0.1 Hz to 25 Hz
- Updates oscillation diagnosis in real time, every second
- Lets you set your own alarm thresholds, delay times and detection bands to suit site requirements
- Integrates with existing SCADA systems via Modbus TCP
- Includes a web-based dashboard for real-time visibility and easy commissioning, with no separate software required
- Rated from -30°C to +60°C, suited to remote and regional generation sites in Australia

If you’re scoping a new generator connection, instability detection is quickly becoming part of the approval process rather than an afterthought. Building it in early means one less thing to resolve later in the connection study, and one less risk to your commissioning timeline.
VIIVX is designed to sit alongside the rest of EPEC’s grid connection and commissioning work, so if we’re already involved in delivering your project, adding VIIVX doesn’t mean bringing in a separate vendor or managing another set of specifications. It’s built by the same team that understands your connection requirements from the outset.
Whether you’re planning a new connection or need to meet updated NSP requirements on an existing site, our team can talk you through how VIIVX fits into your project and your timeline.
